My Style of Practice:
Although ND's are all trained the same, practice styles vary greatly from the more scientific to the more esoteric, and with a lot of in-between. So the experience going from one ND to another may vary greatly. My style of practice is more scientifically oriented. I practice tightly within what is taught in our medical schools and incorporate Naturopathic Tools rooted in modern, scientific, and empirical method. This includes all conventional and modern diagnostic procedures.
Things You May Not Know About Me...
I'm an avid soccer player and am heavily rooted in Bozeman's soccer community. I play soccer year round, hold a national "D" coaching license with the United States Soccer Federation and have coached soccer to a variety of groups aged 12-19 years in Montana's largest soccer academy for the last 10 years: the Bozeman SURF FC. Furthermore, I run an adult indoor soccer/futsal league for 7 months in the wintertime, captain two adult soccer teams during summertime, and compete in an indoor turf league. I have been head coach for Bozeman High School's Lady Hawk's sophomore soccer team for 4 years, and am the current Head Coach for Belgrade High School's Boys Varsity Soccer. Other activities include skiing, mountain biking, and rock climbing with my lovely wife and two cool kids.
Having had the good fortune of traveling extensively throughout the world in my younger days, at least once if not twice a year I keep returning to one of most favorite places on earth found in the Canyonlands surrounding Moab, Utah. I love going to the area around Moab to rejuvenate, cleanse, and get closer to the divine found in the natural world. The desert of Utah is special, sacred, and healing to my soul. No matter how many times I frequent the area in my hippy style Volkswagen pop top camper, I simply can’t get enough of the beauty and ambience of the area. My favorite quote is from J.R.R. Tolkien who authored the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit: "Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost."
Furthermore I have involvement in a handful of entrepreneurial business’s related to manufacturing, commercial and residential real estate development, and recently refurbished a 33,000 square foot building in the heart of my home town, Rapid City that houses 11 different businesses, including a craft beer brewery, coffeeshop, restaurant, and others. thegaprc.com
Why Did I Become a Doctor?
Back in my early 20's, I used to race triathlons competitively for about 7 years.. The physical demands of training 2-4 hours a day plus racing on weekends required a solid nutrition regimen to fuel my body for optimal performance. I delved into the nutrition books to learn as much as I could. Soon enough, it was recognized that the quality of food eaten on one day would dictate my sports performance and/or recovery for the following day. Food became my medicine for my athletic endeavors. To put it bluntly: If I ate a bunch of garbage, I felt like garbage. If I ate nourishing whole foods, I felt nourished and whole. Living this active lifestyle coupled with the meditative monotony that came with running, biking and swimming candidly cleansed most every aspect of my life and put me closer in touch to Mother Nature and the Divine. This had a extremely positive impact in my overall outlook, function, and well-being. During that time of tremendous personal growth, part of me longed to find a way to share and express this nirvana-ish state with others in the form of a career. The search led me to recover a catalog from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (now called National University of Naturopathic Medicine). Back then, we had no internet. The catalog encompassed everything I was looking to embody in a profession in terms of becoming a doctor, scientist, herbalist, teacher, healer, and philosopher. The moment I became acquainted with naturopathic medicine, I knew instantaneously this is what I wanted to do.
My medical practice started in 1999. Early in my practice I started out as a general practitioner and saw the typical gamut that Dr's see as a primary care physician. In those early years, patients, particularly women, kept coming in to address their hormonal concerns. This happened enough that I decided to specialize in that particular field of medicine. In 2004, I received my Certified Menopause Practitioner credential via the prestigious North American Menopause Society and the bulk of my practice now surrounds women's hormonal health, peri-menopause and menopause, PMS and menstrual irregularities. The wives bring in their husbands for similar concerns so I remain focused on hormonal optimization for quality of life, longevity and well being for both women and men. I still see many with gastrointestinal issues, thyroid disorders, and other health issues, however ~75% of my patient load is women and their hormones. Not every case warrants hormone therapy. Sometimes the plants, herbs, and supplements will suffice enough. Hormones are usually reached for when endogenous production of hormones cease to become produced. The plants and herbs... as wonderful and far reaching as they are, are unfortunately non-hormonal. So the plants have their limitations. When hormones decline due to natural process of aging, then it becomes time to replace with hormones. I exclusively prescribe Bio-identical hormones, as non-bioidentical hormones have been wrought with strife and no shortage of controversy. My job is to sift the scientific facts from fiction, and allay the controversies surrounding Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy from their non-bioidentical counterparts, in the endeavor to optimize health and well-being.
I enjoy practicing naturopathic medicine because it has a significant impact on people's quality of life. By and large, people don't want to take prescription pills which really don't cure too much and often carry a host of unpleasant side effects. Instead, patients prefer to take charge of their health and it is most rewarding to assist in facilitating that process. Health starts from within. When patients respond to a healthy treatment regimen, they look better, feel better, sleep better, and have more energy. One thing which has been noticed in the more mature age groups I work with, those patients look 10 years younger than others in their age group and they take significantly less prescription medications as their peers. They remain active with hiking, biking, skiing, horseback riding and the like. The maintain vibrant libido's in their relationships and have healthy amounts of energy. Furthermore, mammograms are coming in great, bone densities have improved on DEXA bone scans, and colonoscopies show colons "clean as whistles." Our Bozeman community is known for being quite active. It is simply unacceptable for many in our wonderful community to accept waiting for their bodies fall apart due to aging. There's no need to endure the the effects of aging when one can feel great and remain active and potent at any age.
I'm committed to my patients care and remain as available as possible for all established patients. Each new intake lasts 1.5-2 hours, which is so contrary to the average 5-7 minutes typically received in the conventional medical arena. Time is taken with an individual to get a complete history, order and review labs, prioritize health matters, and allow for Q&A. It's very important for me to provide a sufficient amount of time for patients so they may voice all their concerns regarding their health. Time is given, most importantly, because it is important for my patients to leave my clinic not feeling as if they are a simply a number, but to leave in sanctity of knowing they have been heard.
Conditions I like to treat the most:
- Women's hormonal health and health optimization
- Men's health, hormonal health and health optimization
- Anything digestive related
- Thyroid disorders
- Fatigue
- Athletes aiming to optimize athletic performance
Charities I support:
- National Outdoor Leadership School (Lander, WY)
- Working Against Violence, Inc. (Rapid City, SD)
- Haven (Bozeman, MT).
When a senior in high school, I did a 30-day NOLS backpacking/mountaineering course in the Wind River range of Wyoming. This really opened my mind to power and simplicity of the natural world. With NOLS, not only did I learn to rock climb and mountaineer, I further learned to respect and care for our outdoors, so I support NOLS's endeavors to teach outdoor leadership skills and efforts to safeguard our natural world. Since I work in the arena of women's health, I see all too frequently the effects of women in unhealthy relationships and families impacted by drugs and alcohol abuse. So I support these organizations to help their resources in assisting their efforts to temper, if not eradicate the toxic effects of drugs, alcohol, domestic violence and the bulldozer of destruction they cause.
